Sildeorm (The herring worm)
Zoonotic nematodes II | Superfamily: Ascaridoidea | Family: Anisakidae
Adult females from the intestine of a whale. Morphologically similar to all other Ascaridida. Mouth with three lips in both sexes. Females 4-20 cm long. Males 3-15 cm long. The posterior end of the female is rounded.
Whitish larvae (L3) from the abdomen of a herring. Approximately 2 cm long. The larvae migrate to the musculature of the herring and may survive the process of salting for up to three weeks, but not freezing.
Final hosts: Marine mammals.
Intermediate hosts: Small crustaceans, fish and squid.

OBS: Man may become infected by consuming raw, insufficiently cooked infected fish meat.
Location: Adult worms in the small intestine of final hosts. Larvae in the abdominal wall and musculature of intermediate hosts.
