Male about 3 mm long. Short pedipalps. Adanal plates. Festoons on posterior margin. Anal groove distinct.

Female. Up to 10 cm when engorged. Small scutum. Anal groove present but often faint. Short comma-shaped spiracles.

Hosts: Various animals, but mainly dogs. (This is a common three-host tick). |

Transmits canine babesiosis in southern Europe. May cause tick paralysis in dogs.

Rh. sanguineus is imported from the tropics and can live indoor in DK. The related Rh. appendiculatus is the chief vector of Theileria parva in East Africa (East Coast Fever).

Morphology of Rhipicephalus spp.: Acarine arthropods with all characters typical of Ixodidae (scutum, legs, etc). Cephalothorax with short pedipalps and hypostome. Hexagonal basis capituli in dorsal view. The first coxa has two strong spurs. Festoons in males. |
