Demodex spp.
Hårsækmider (Demodectic mites)
Order: Acarina: mites and ticks | Suborder: Trombidiformes: Other skin-related mites.
Demodex bovis from cattle.
Hosts: All domestic mammals (each species adapted to own host).
Location: The mite lives in hair follicles and sebaceous glands. In cattle (D. bovis) hair follicles are filled with green pus. In dogs (D. canis) hair loss and dry crusted skin can be seen and seldom pustular dermatitis. 2-3 species recently defined in dogs and cats.
Causes demodectic / follicular mange.
General morphology of Demodex: Burrowing mites adapted to dwelling in hair follicles. Length up to 0.3 mm. Elongated body resembling the shape of a cigar. Anteriorly very short mouthparts and four pairs of stumpy legs.
