Correct name: Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus.

Medium-sized, raised, glistening colonies. The colonies are pigmented, the colour varying from grey-white, to yellow, or orange.
 
 
 
 
The same Blood Agar plate examined with transmitted light. The colonies are surrounded by an inner zone of complete haemolysis (delta-toxin) and an outer zone of incomplete haemolysis caused by beta-toxin. The margin of the beta-haemolysis is sharp.

General characteristics: Gram-positive cocci that occur in pairs, tetrads or clusters. Catalase-positive. Attacks sugars by fermentation. Non-motile.
