Moraxella bovis
Moraxella bovis Moraxella bovis
Small to medium sized, flat to hemispherical, greyish colonies. Freshly isolated strains corrode the agar and often show surface spreading due to "twitching motility". In older cultures the ability to cause corrosion of the agar is lost along with the twitching motility.
The same Blood Agar plate examined with transmitted light. There is a haemolytic zone around the colonies. This is more easily seen if the colonies are removed.

General characteristics: Gram-negative rods. Catalase- and oxidase-positive. Does not attack sugars. Obligately aerobic. Non-motile, but the cells may be fimbriated and show "twitching motility".
