Sarcocystis porcihominis
Svinesarkosporidier (Porcine sarcocysts)
Kingdom: Protozoa | Phylum: Apicomplexa | Class: Coccidea | Family: Sarcocystidae
Cysts of S. porcihominis in pork. The cyst is located in the musculature without any reactions from the host. The cysts contain large amounts of cystozoites. The cells are infective to humans eating pork containing cysts and gamogony/syngamy takes place in the intestinal epithelial cells. Pigs are infected by ingesting sporocysts originating from human faeces (contamination of fodder or water). Normally the infection is without symptoms in both hosts.
Final hosts: Humans.
Intermediate hosts: Pigs in this particular case (Sarcocystis porcihominis).
Location: Bradyzoite-containing sarcocysts in striated musculature of pigs.
