This medium is used for isolation of salmonellae. Motile strains of salmonellae migrate through the medium faster than competing organisms producing opaque zones. Suspect cultures can be tested further by taking inoculum from the edge of the zone. Note that both S. pullorum and S. gallinarum are non-motile.
