This test is used to determine if an organism can deaminate phenylalanine to phenylpyruvic acid enzymatically.
After incubation, aqueous ferric chloride is added to the inoculated tube. The ferric chloride chelates with phenylpyruvic acid to form a green colour.
1. Uninoculated medium.
2. Positive reaction: Proteus.
3. Negative reaction: Salmonella.
