Methyl Red Test
This test is used to test whether an organism can produce and maintain acid end products in a medium with a buffering system. In effect this is a quantitative test for acid production from fermentation of glucose. The culture is incubated in Clark and Lubb's medium. Half of this medium is then used for the methyl red test and the other half for a Voges-Proskauer test. Methyl red indicator is added to the medium.

1. Uninoculated medium.

2. Positive reaction: Salmonella.

3. Negative reaction: Klebsiella.
