The purpose of this test is to determine whether an organism can clot plasma by the action of the enzyme coagulase. It is typically used to differentiate between species in the genus Staphylococcus. The formation of a fibrin clot or fibrin threads are interpreted as positive reactions. The tube should be observed for clotting after 4 and 24 hours because the profibrinolysin-fibrinolysin system may become activated and the clot lysed. Only a positive reaction is shown here.
