Carbohydrate Fermentation 2
The purpose of this test is to determine whether an organism can ferment a specific carbohydrate with production of acid. In this example lactose is used. The indicator is bromthymol blue and turns yellow when pH is low.
1. Uninoculated medium.
2. Positive reaction: Escherichia coli.
3. Negative reaction: Salmonella. The medium is lighter in colour than the uninoculated medium due to turbidity caused by the growth of bacteria.
