Lactobacillus salivarius
Lactobacillus salivarius Lactobacillus salivarius
Correct name: L. salivarius subsp. saliva.

Pinpoint, semitransparent colonies. This culture has been incubated for 48 hours in a micro-aerobic atmosphere.

The same Blood Agar plate examined with transmitted light. The colonies are surrounded by a green zone. This 'greening' is caused by the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide converting the haemoglobin to methaemoglobin in the agar.
General characteristics: Gram-positive coccobacilli or short rods. Catalase-negative. Attacks sugars fermentatively without production of gas. Microaerophilic. Non-motile.
