Prototheca zopfii Prototheca zopfii
Greyish yeast-like colonies with a granular surface.

Lactofenol-cotton blue preparation. Cells are spherical to elliptical and of variable size. The large cells (sporangia) are multi-cellular. The small cells are produced by rupture of the sporangia.
Prototheca is a genus of algae without chloroplasts. Reproduction is asexual. A series of mitoses leads to the formation of a large multi-cellular sporangium, which on rupture liberates smaller mono-nuclear cells.
