Rhodococcus equi Rhodococcus equi
Relatively large and mucoid colonies. Initially the colonies are greyish but after further incubation may appear slightly salmon in colour.
The same Blood Agar plate examined with transmitted light. There is no haemolysis.
 
General characteristics: Gram-positive cells with a pronounced rod-coccus cycle. Cells in early exponential phase are rod-shaped and cells in stationary phase are coccoid. Catalase-positive. Does not attack sugars. Obligate aerobes. Non-motile.
